In January 2009, Hilary Clinton became the US Secretary of State, the first former first lady in that role. She brought into her new position a wealth of experience and unique skills. With her appointment, Barack Obama has turned a bitter rival in the presidential campaign into a partner.
Under the Clinton administration, Hilary had a chance to travel the world for 8 years, visiting more than 80 countries. A naturally gifted diplomat, she met not only with world leaders, but also the people in villages and remote areas. She came to places that people in her position rarely paid attention to. Resigning from the Senate upon being offered the position of Secretary of State, she entered the new job well prepared.
Hilary inherited a dangerous and unpredictable legacy in foreign affairs from the Bush administration. Acting as the foreign affairs advisor to President Obama, she faces tremendous challenges ahead: the wars against terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan, the on-going bloody Palestine-Israeli conflict, the North Korean nuclear proliferation crisis, the controversial relationship with Iran, among many others. Above all is the daunting need to change America’s public image in the world’s eyes.

Staunchly pro-Israel, Hilary may raise some suspicions from the Middle East. However, she may be effective in persuading Israel to make tough peace decisions. When she accepted the job offer, there were concerns about the conflict of interests related to the charitable foundation that her husband Bill Clinton is running. However, she claimed that both she and her husband did not receive a salary from it and thus were not under any financial influence regarding the donations made to it. To assist her in her new job, she has selected people from her former Senate circle and friends.
At 62, Hilary is full of energy and well respected by friends and foes alike. Twice she was recognised as one of the most influential attorneys in the US. Over 50 books have been written about her accomplished career, including her role as the first female partner of a law firm in the US, a tireless advocate for children and families, and a twice elected New York Senator. American feel justified in their hope for a new ambassador.
